Progress #17: Everything that has a beginning has an end
So those last two levels are looking good and the first beginning-to-end playthough of the game is now possible.
After an epoch of development, I have an end-game boss ... and like everything else about this game, it's kind of weird and somehow brings me joy to make. Behind The Queen Mother of Sinkiaga in all her snakey glory!
Lol, jk that's not even her final form.
Endings are such a problem in games to the point where not having an ending is genre-defining ... an ending has to be emotionally satisfying and if you can't deliver then don't, I guess.
Speaking of which, I'm currently replaying Mass Effect 3, a game that stands out for it's ending. I played it when it came out and put it down at the end with a weary resignation and never picked it up again.
I havent seen a lot of the content added over the years, so now it's a very different game. But will I feel anything when it ends this time around? Will I have yet another Fontaine moment?
Everything that has a beginning has an end, even cash-cows like Destiny and WoW will end, one day in the dystopian far meta-wowdestiny future.
As a game developer I think I crave endings, the feeling of beating the boss and putting the game down so I want to deliver that experience. Closure for me as the developer and hopefully you, the player. That has value :p
